If you thought the sequel to the sci-fi movie beyond James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar was never going to come out, well, that makes sense, that’s it’s been 13 years since the original hit cinema screens, and the sequel was originally supposed to air in 2014. It only took eight years, but it turns out Avatar: The Way of the Water is extremely real and on the way – and the proof is in this very first trailer.
Obviously, there are very few non-visual information to tell us what this film will be about, apart from the giant Na’vi from Pandora will spend a lot of time wading through the many bodies of water on the planet. But there are the striking images of Na’vI work with humans, other Na’vI hold guns (but are they real Na’vme or humans in Na’vi avatars?), and a clear focus on both species work together– far from the tense human-Na’vi chronicle relationships in the original. As in the first film, however, the film’s biggest star is the world of Pandora itself and its cacophony of alien flora, rendered by CG in stunning color and lushness, under Cameron’s direction.
The film has an official synopsis, which is substantially light on the details: “Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of the Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the problems that follow them, the efforts they make to protect themselves, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies that they endure.
Avatar: The Way of the Water stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi and CCH Pounder, all reprising their roles from the 2009 film; Sigourney Weaver will also return, but under another character (mysterious…). Meanwhile, Kate Winslet, Jemaine Clement, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Vin Diesel, Oona Champlin and more are joining the cast. The film will be released on December 16, 2022.
