In 2009 James Cameron Avatar was an absolute box office success, making a planet full of money while starting a trend of 3D movies. It also introduced the audience to the alien world of Pandora, which was full of wonder, wonder and breathtaking beauty. Sadly, it took a while to get back to it, but Pandora is finally in sight once again. Not only the long-awaited Avatar 2 will be released in 2022, but a video game expanding on the lore of the franchise is also in the works.
Avatar: Pandora’s Frontiers will allow players to experience its eponymous alien world in a fully interactive way as they take over the Na’vi in an effort to protect their land. Announced years ago, players finally got to experience the game and a tentative release window last year.
What is Avatar: Pandora’s Frontiers?
Borders from Pandora is meant to expand on the world of film and its canon. However, it is also removed from the film in that it follows a completely different group of protagonists. As in the film, the good guys are the native Na’vi, while the antagonists are the Human Resources Development Administration, which seeks to take advantage of Pandora’s resources.
Since the RDA is still around, it would seem that the events of Pandora’s Borders take place either before the first Avatar or are concomitant with it. It will also take place in the Western Frontier, which is an area of Pandora that was not shown in the film. This makes it possible to meet different tribes of Na’vi and new creatures in the game, opening it up to all sorts of possibilities.
Avatar: Pandora’s Borders Trailer
The game’s first trailer was released last year during Ubisoft’s E3 presentation, and it felt more like a throwback to the world of Pandora than anything. The game’s graphics were presented in stunning detail, featuring the Na’vi and several recognizable species of alien animals from Avatar highlighted. However, no actual gameplay is in the trailer, so players are still somewhat in the dark as to what the experience will entail.
News and Updates on Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora
Avatar: Pandora’s Frontiers is developed by Massive Entertainment, which has previously worked on titles such as the ground control and Division of Tom Clancy series, as well as Far Cry 3. This pedigree, along with that of publisher Ubisoft, ensures that the game will be one full of action and adventure. Other regional branches of Ubisoft have also been working on the game, which, if nothing else, looks visually amazing so far.
Although it’s supposed to be nearing its release date, Pandora’s Borders was announced in 2017 as Massive Entertainment’s next big project. It wasn’t until four years later that the title would even get its official name, making the wait for the game as nerve-wracking as the sequels to the popular first film.
When will Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora be released?
The game had a huge gap in development and little to show for it other than what is essentially a graphical tech demo. As such, there is currently no scheduled release date for Pandora’s Borders. The 2021 investor call that gave the game its name revealed it was slated for a 2022/2023 release date.
Currently, Ubisoft announces that the game will launch in 2022. However, since there is no actual gameplay footage yet, there is a good chance that it will be delayed to 2023. When Avatar: Pandora’s Frontiers finally released, it will be available for Microsoft Windows, Sony PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Amazon Luna and Google Stadia.
